So I bought a mobo bundle that came with 2x8gb DDR4, but I bought in the Cyber Monday sale 2x16gb and the guys fitted them as requested. However instead of a refund for the 8s I found them in the box. So should I use the 8s in the two spare slots, one on each channel? Or should I put them on eBay?

it turns out the the x570 chipset or windows 10 (or both) handles asynchronous dual channel with out the limitation of not exceeding the smallest DIMM capacity. I'm running 8x2/16x2 otherwise identically speced trident Z with XMP on. Both synthetic benchmarks and workloads exceeding 40GB of ram fail to produce any kind of odd behavior or instability. I have not been able to test linux though.

funny i have benn having 4 diferent manufacturers ram sticks mixing in my pc for 15 years now never had a single issue with it i mixed on pentium 2 on pentium 4 and ddr 2 ddr 4 generations worked without problems on each generation jou can mix as long the mhz is same

With my 9-year old system getting errors once every few months, where the solution is to use a single RAM (I have 2) for a few hours, I don't think I will be tinkering with the RAM anytime soon, even if I only have a total of 8 Gb...

I would love to see a video on async dual channel works, because it doesn't make sense to me lol. For instance, apparently the lg gram can recognize up to 40 gb ram (8 soldered on the board) in this config. I just don't know if you would actually get a boost in this config unless you just run most things single channel on that 32 gb swappable stick... in which case... I just wonder why it would really be worth the effort...

Right well I built my pc a few years back and bought 2x4 ddr4 3000mhz! Then I decided I wanted more ram so I bought 2x8 ddr4 3200mhz and put the old ones in a box under my bed, I then bought a 1440p monitor and wanted to upgrade my pc a little on the cheap so I looked into the best cpu for my current motherboard which is when I realised that my motherboard can't run faster that 2133mhz ram so I decided to dig out the old ram and shove it all in! I now have 24gb ran running at 2133mhz and haven't had a problem

ram compatibilety has wome a long way? i mixed difrent brands of ddr, ddr2 and ddr3 ram never had a problem or had to tweak bios settings. No idee what ur talking about.

With 4x32GB I couldn't even get the rated 3200hz when I bought two kits of 2x32GB of the same memory. Got in contact with their support, and they couldn't guarantee the stated clock speed unless I bought a 4x32GB kit explicitly. So if you want to use all four lanes at the maximum of your MOBO you need to be much more careful.

I had something interesting come up when mixing RAM. I had an Omen 25L that was supposed to have 2x8GB sticks. It had four slots, but only had a single 16GB stick. I found a pair of 8GB sticks from the same manufacturer with the same speed, and installed them. ALL the ram downthrottled from 2933 to 2400. I pulled out the single 16, and the speed went back up. I reinstalled it, then removed one of the 8 GB sticks, and it downthrottled again. I removed the second 8GB stick, back up went the speed. It didn't seem to matter which slots were used, or which stick was put in which slot, the results were the same. I finally gave up, returned the 8GB pair, and found a single 16. The speed remained 2933 with the second 16 stick installation.

I put 2x Delta RGB DDR4 4gb 3000 and 2x G.Skill Aegis 8gb 3000 together and i think it runs because it shows in the task manager that i have 24gb of ram and its currently running at 2133 but i dont know if it will work at 3000mhz can someon help?

Always been a compatability issue for me.... Usually with OEM machines and limited tweaking options... I usually just go crucial for friends with store bought PC's....they probably made it anyway, and their website has a good app for finding and ordering compatible dimms....they work, are slower, and slightly more expensive; but they work, and normals ppls prefer it work out of the box....

I remember back when I first got an i7 950 (Q4 2009 about), had 1x2GB DDR 1066 to begin with, then over the two years following I would always get another 2GB stick every two or three months until I finally managed to fill all 6 slots (was a budget constrained student at the time), ran fine for till about 2016 when one stick no longer wanted to keep the speed.

I mixed 2 capacities a 16GB and 8 GB and they work flawlessly and in Dual channel mode thanks to the board allowing that, and the XMP works flawlessly as well.

The first AND ONLY time I ever mixed memory, my computer stuttered consistently no matter what I was doing. I matched the speed, timings, and latency. Stutter. I used stock XMP profile for all the sticks. Stutter. Even though these sticks were from the same maker with the same DRAM chips on them, they were incompatible. Never again shall I mix memory.

I tried adding a 8GB stick to an existing 4GB stock and the system would not POST. Used just the 8GB and the system worked just fine. Both were from the same manufacturer AData. And there are only two slots on the Mobo. Update: I interchanged the slots they were in and now I got it running at 12 gigs.

Did this back in the dram days as a kid. Mis matched completely different modules. One posted fine and ran at the proper ram total. Switched the sticks and got a strange ram total. The system ran like a beast forva while. That and as a kid thought it was bigger number better.... till a burning smell and smoke came out of the pc. Lesson learned as a kid.

I've been building computers since the days it required schematics and a soldering iron. But since the advent of memory slots, I've been a stickler to only buy motherboards with (at least) four RAM slots and using only half for the initial build - usually splurging slightly in the now in anticipation for what will be more likely available in the future. Where memory is concerned, I always look at the newest modules with the best overall performance I can get for a reasonable price. My current main rig is somewhat ancient (i7-5820K w/ASROCK X99 Extreme4) with a pair of Ripjaws F4-3200C15G-32GVKs, (2x16GB) which had recently come out and were the best I could afford at the time. Bought another pair about two years ago (now at 64GB total) and, in fact, the exact same modules are still available today - more than five years after my initial build. Granted one can't predict the future but, if you splurge a bit in certain places (mobo & RAM in particular), you can reliably expect plenty of upgrade avenues for yourself in the future.

Heh... Mixing ram... (has a PC with 4 different DIMMs of 3 different brands and 2d different sizes.) A kingston DIMM, patriot DIMM, two corsair DIMM and one... hold on... Elixir branded stick. Works alright, I've beem running it in the "leftover parts" PC which I kept plugged 20/7 at one point for about a year for remote access to old data. It also has a 2,5" 1TB SSDH and 3,5" 80GB, 500GB, 2TB and 4TB HDD's inside. The cludge is real, but it works reliably.

Without mentioning the die of each RAM kit this video is rather pointless... also gaming load is not exactly sensitive to RAM configurations. Probably irrelevant in this case but next time please use proper benchmarks like Geekbench and Linpack. Also should've checked all the timings to see how the motherboard trains.

I have used mixed memory tons of times without any issue.. but with that being said, I was taught to always install memory in pairs. I think that's why it always works.

My old PC years ago ran tri channel RAM and I ran 3x2gb sticks of Gskill ripjaws. One of the sticks died after a dodgy power outage, so I grabbed a cheapo kingston stick off ebay to replace it, (back when I didn't know much about computers and had little money). I threw it in without checking anything in terms of compatibility and it worked perfectly fine, no difference at all. Magically with no logic and pure pot luck I'd found almost identical specced RAM and it worked just as well as my previous. Looked ugly as sin, but no issues. to this day I'm still proud of my noob self for that achievement.

in my new pc i got maximus xi extreme 9900ks and teamgroup-ud4-2666 and had audio dropouts, changed to a g.skill 3600 kit thats on the mobo's QVL and it works perfectly now havent had a single audio dropout since

Me with my stock 2666 8gb stick and crucial 16bg 3200 in my gf75, cool thing is the system defaulted to 3200 after install and I've had zero issues. Well, except for my razer mouse.

Ok I have a question which you might think I'm a bit stupid. Late last year I brought some memory that said "AMD ONLY" I can't remember the exact spec of them apart from they were 16Gb sticks. I had never heard of memory that was CPU specific and at the time I only had Intel based machines. Long story short, these memory sticks didn't work with Intel, but when I built my AMD they worked just fine. Why is this so??

Bought two kits of corsair vengeance 16gb 3600mhz cl18 where one was samsung c die and the other was a very good nanya die. They barely even worked together on 2133mhz and wouldnt even boot on 3200mhz cl16 and definitely didnt boot on 3600mhz cl18.

I see mixing RAM like mixing shoes. It really doesn't matter too much so long as you put the shoe on the correct foot, which is not what I did with my old system. I had two different models that were not paired in the correct channel slots. The result was... I have no idea because I never noticed any issues and I wasn't into tweaking BIOS settings. Of course I also had no idea what I was doing back then.

I've mixed memory in literally every notebook I've owned since 2007 (DDR2) and never had any issues. I always went with same frequency and that's all, even mixed different size modules though that's not ideal. If you go for the same sizes/frequency/latency you should not have any issues specially on DDR4. And unless you're in a gaming PC that you can have modules with sinkers or visible RGB stuff always go for the cheapest ones, if it doesn't fail at first chances are it won't ever fail.

I made the best out of a bad situation. I once had a Samsung-Laptop wich came with the odd configuration of 2 + 4GB. Sadly i accidentally drowned the laptop in orange juice, but the SSD and the RAM in it were still fine, so i took the 4GB module and added it to the single 4GB module in my dads laptop. The modules are mismatched but they are running fine and it was pretty much a free upgrade. Better than just having the modules lying around.

me watching this on different brand ram and different capacity - 8Gb Ddr3 Vgen - 4Gb Ddr3 Kingston its suprisingly runs well ^^

For the longest time my low-end has been running mismatched sticks. 2 matching sticks, 2 randoms, all DDR3. It's jank as fuck and only 20 of the 24 gigs actually show up, but it runs at 1800mhz just fine.

Mismatched the ram at purchase time since half my kit failed and there was no replacements in the store. Ran okay at stock, but not a hertz more. Mismatched it again recently and ohh boy, we take a train down to 2133 mhz just to type this comment XD Probably going to flip old modules and buy a matching set.

I use corsair (2x4gb) and 1x8gb stick (that long named brand) DDR3 and it register as 16gb ram without any issues. Am I just a maniac?
